In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the release of “Reign In Blood”, the third studio album and the major label debut by the American thrash metal kings SLAYER, Mark Eglinton of The Quietus spoke to Philip Anselmo (DOWN, PANTERA, ARSON ANTHEM, SUPERJOINT RITUAL) about the record’s tremendous impact and enduring influence. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
The Quietus: Do you remember when you first heard “Reign In Blood”? Set the scene and tell us what your first thoughts were…
Anselmo: I bought “Reign In Blood” on vinyl when it first came out. I really had no cash to do much of anything but getting that record was essential… Shit, I probably would have stolen it if it weren’t for a friend lending me the cash to buy it. Anyway, all I had to listen to it on was my buddy’s shitty turntable at the apartment I was living in and it skipped constantly — I was furious! But I eventually got the cassette and all was, well, crushing! There wasn’t a single show I’d go to where “Reign In Blood” wasn’t the talk of the night; it killed everything else even considered “heavy.”
SLAYER’s Tom Araya is currently under the care of a specialist for a back injury, thought to be related to his on-stage activity, and the physician has ordered an immediate surgical procedure to take place in Texas, Tuesday, November 3 morning.
This past summer while co-headlining the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour, the members of SLAYER sat down on their tour bus backstage in Camden, New Jersey and talked about the eleven tracks on their upcoming album, “World Painted Blood”.
SLAYER will perform on ABC-TV’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Wednesday, November 4 (which will actually air the morning of Thursday, November 5).
30-second, reduced-quality audio samples of all the tracks that appear on SLAYER’s upcoming album, “World Painted Blood”, can be streamed on Amazon.fr.
David Farrier of New Zealand’s 3 News conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King backstage at the Logan Campbell Centre in Auckland last night (Monday, October 5) prior to the band’s performance with MEGADETH. King made several in-store appearances at select B.C. Rich retailers while on the 2009 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. The special events were co-sponsored by EMG pickups.
Joe Bosso of MusicRadar.com recently conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King. During the chat, which is available for streaming and/or download, King discusses the making of the band’s new album, “World Painted Blood”; his B.C. Rich signature series guitars; and he even answers some of the readers’ questions.
Kerry King (guitar): It was the first time you actually heard SLAYER in its pure ferocity, and it made a big difference. One funny thing about that album is if it came out today, no one would give a shit. They’d say, “That’s cool.” But at the time it came out it made such a difference. People still reflect on that as a poignant time, where shit changed.
Artisan News Service recently caught up with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King to find out if he ever thinks about his band eventually getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “Only because… Didn’t METALLICA get in this year or last year or something? And I’m like, oh yeah, they’ve experienced and experimented with more of a pop angle, so I can definitely see them,” he said. “Whether our time comes and people say, ‘You’re going to go into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.’ I’d kind of be surprised if we did because we are the anti-everything.”
